About Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 is Valve's co-op zombie shooter. Four survivors fight their way through hordes of infected across the American Deep South, from Savannah to New Orleans, while the game's AI Director changes the enemies, items and pacing every time you play.
It came out for Windows and Xbox 360 in November 2009, followed by Mac in 2010 and Linux in 2013, and players still run campaigns, versus and survival on it today. In September 2020 Valve added The Last Stand, a community-built update with a new campaign and survival maps.
In versus, two teams of four take turns as the survivors and the special infected, so a dedicated server needs 8 slots. Every plan here has 8.

How to Join Your Left 4 Dead 2 Server
Your server's IP address and port are in the Gamepanel as soon as it's online.
Connect from the console
- In Left 4 Dead 2, open Options > Keyboard/Mouse and allow the developer console.
- Press ~ to open the console.
- Type connect IP:port, for example connect 123.123.123.123:27015.
- Press Enter to join.
Server name, game mode and RCON password are set in our server.cfg guide.
Start from a lobby
- Create a lobby and set the server type to Best Available Dedicated.
- Open the console from the main menu.
- Run mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:port with your server's address.
- Start the game, and the lobby moves to your server.
Joining by IP first disables the invite button. Our lobby guide explains why.

8. Co-op campaigns are for 4 survivors, and versus and scavenge are 4 v 4, so every plan comes with 8 slots.
Which game modes can my server run?▾
Co-op, realism, versus, team versus, survival and scavenge. Set them with sv_gametypes and mp_gamemode in server.cfg. Our configuration guide lists each one.
How do I get my lobby onto my server?▾
Create a lobby, choose Best Available Dedicated, then run mm_dedicated_force_servers with your server's IP and port in the console before you start. See our lobby guide.
Why is the invite button disabled?▾
If the first player joins by IP, there's no lobby behind the game, so there's nothing to invite people to. Start from a lobby instead, as above.
Do I need a Steam Game Server Login Token?▾
It's recommended, so your server is tied to your Steam account. Our GSLT guide shows how to make one for App ID 550 and add it to the server.
What's the difference between the plans?▾
