Performance

Why Single-Core Speed Is the Only Spec That Matters

Game servers are fundamentally different from web servers, databases, and most cloud workloads. A web server handles thousands of small, parallel requests, spread that across as many cores as you like and throughput scales with it. A game server runs a single game world: one physics simulation, one AI tick, one netcode loop. All of that runs on one or two CPU cores at any given moment. Adding more cores doesn't help. Clock speed does.

This is why we don't benchmark our hardware on multi-threaded throughput or virtualisation density. We benchmark it on what matters to you: how quickly one core can execute a game tick, how consistently it maintains that speed under sustained load, and how low the variance is (what server administrators call "server tick jitter", the variation that causes lag spikes even when average performance looks fine).

Our Normal tier's EPYC processors at 4.5GHz+ handle the majority of games without breaking a sweat. But some games, Satisfactory is the most extreme example, scale their CPU load with factory complexity in ways that can genuinely saturate a single core on a lower-clocked machine. Heavily modded ARK or Rust servers with high NPC counts, complex AI, or many active vehicles behave similarly. For those workloads, the Ryzen 9 at 5.5GHz+ on our Extreme tier is meaningfully faster, not 10% faster, but 20–30% faster at sustained peak single-thread load, which is often the difference between smooth 30-tick gameplay and noticeable rubber-banding.

NVMe storage matters too, though differently. World saves, map loads, and chunk generation are all disk-bound operations. A world save on a spinning disk can cause a momentary server freeze while the write completes; on NVMe, the same operation is nearly invisible. For games that save frequently (Valheim, ARK, Satisfactory, 7 Days to Die) or generate chunks dynamically (Minecraft, Terraria), NVMe is the difference between saves that are painless and saves that players notice.

Hardware Questions Answered

Which hardware tier should I choose?
For most games and most server configurations, Normal Hardware is the right choice, it handles the overwhelming majority of game server workloads without issue. Upgrade to Extreme Hardware if you're running a heavily modded server, a game known for high CPU demands (Satisfactory, ARK with increased NPCs, Space Engineers with large grids), or a high-population server where you want maximum headroom. When in doubt, start on Normal, you can always upgrade later, and our support team can advise if you're seeing performance issues.
Why does single-core clock speed matter more than core count?
Game servers run a single game world, one physics simulation, one AI tick loop, one netcode thread. These processes are largely single-threaded by design, meaning they execute on one CPU core at a time. Adding more cores doesn't make that one thread run faster. Increasing the clock speed of that one core does. This is why we specifically source AMD Ryzen and EPYC processors for their high single-core boost clocks rather than choosing server CPUs with many lower-clocked cores.
What does "host server RAM" mean? How much does my game server get?
The RAM figures on this page (128GB / 256GB) refer to the total RAM installed in the underlying physical host machine that powers multiple game server instances. Your individual game server is allocated a defined amount of RAM based on the plan you order, that figure is shown on each game's product page and in the Gamepanel. The host machine's total RAM simply describes the capacity available across all game servers sharing that machine.
Can I upgrade my hardware tier after ordering?
Yes. Hardware tier upgrades (Normal to Extreme) are available at any time by contacting our support team. We'll migrate your server to an Extreme Hardware host and adjust your billing accordingly. Your data, config, and mods are preserved during the migration.
What storage type does PingPerfect use?
Both hardware tiers use a combination of enterprise SSDs and NVMe drives. Normal Hardware uses Samsung EVO SSDs and NVMe drives; Extreme Hardware uses Samsung PRO SSDs and NVMe drives. NVMe storage provides significantly lower access latency and higher IOPS than SATA SSDs, this matters most for games with frequent world saves or dynamic chunk generation, where slow disk access causes noticeable server hitches.
How is your DDoS protection implemented?
Our DDoS mitigation is in-house and custom-built, not a generic off-the-shelf appliance or a third-party scrubbing service. It runs 24/7 across all of our datacenters and is continuously updated as new attack patterns emerge. Game server traffic has very specific characteristics (small, high-frequency UDP packets on fixed ports), and our mitigation rules are tuned specifically for that traffic profile rather than being generic internet traffic filters.
Are your servers located in shared datacenters or owned by PingPerfect?
We operate from premium co-location facilities in our 20 global locations, top-tier Tier III and Tier IV datacenters with the physical infrastructure (power redundancy, cooling, physical security) that enterprise co-location provides. Our servers are owned and operated by PingPerfect; we simply lease rack space and connectivity in these facilities. This gives us full control over hardware configuration and network tuning without the capital cost of building our own datacenter buildings.
