When a player dies in Enshrouded, the tombstone mode setting decides what they lose. You can make death a minor setback, a serious penalty, or remove the penalty altogether. This guide explains the three options and shows you how to change the setting on your server.
The tombstone mode options
- AddBackpackMaterials: only the contents of the player's backpack are lost and placed in a tombstone. Items on the hotbar and equipped gear are kept. This is the default.
- Everything: the backpack, the hotbar and all equipped items are lost and placed in a tombstone. This is the harshest option.
- NoTombstone: nothing is lost when a player dies, so there is no penalty at all.
If you are not sure which to pick, AddBackpackMaterials suits most servers, Everything works well for hardcore communities, and NoTombstone is ideal for relaxed or building-focused servers.
How to change the tombstone mode
- Sign in to your game control panel and open your Enshrouded server.
- Stop the server and wait for it to shut down fully.
- Open Configuration Files in the panel.
- Open enshrouded_server.json using the text editor.
- Set Game Setting Preset to Custom. The tombstone mode can only be changed while the Custom preset is selected.
- Set Tombstone Mode to the option you want.
- Select Save & Exit.
- Start the server.
The new setting only takes effect once the server has been started again.
If you prefer to edit the raw file, the relevant lines look like this:
"gameSettingsPreset": "Custom",
"gameSettings": {
"tombstoneMode": "Everything"
}
Replace Everything with AddBackpackMaterials or NoTombstone to use one of the other options. The value goes inside double quotation marks and is case sensitive, so type it exactly as shown.
Troubleshooting
- The setting is not applying: make sure Game Setting Preset is set to Custom. With any other preset, the individual game settings are ignored.
- Changes are not taking effect: confirm the server was fully stopped before you edited the file, that you saved it, and that you started the server again afterwards.
- The server will not start after an edit: check that the value is spelled exactly as shown, is inside double quotation marks, and that there are no missing or extra commas in the file.
Tombstone mode is one of several custom gameplay settings. See our guide on changing the difficulty for the full list.
