A password keeps your server private, so only people you have shared it with can get in. Enshrouded ties passwords to user groups: whichever password a player types when joining decides which group they land in, and that group decides what they are allowed to do. Both passwords are set in the server's main configuration file through the panel's config editor.

The two passwords you will set

  • Default user password: the one you give out to your players. Joining with it gives normal player permissions.
  • Admin group password: the one you keep for yourself. Joining with it gives full admin rights, such as kicking and banning players.

Each needs to be unique, and the admin password should never be handed out to regular players.

How to set the passwords

  1. Sign in to your game control panel and open your Enshrouded server.
  2. If the server is running, stop it first.
  3. Open Configuration Files in the panel.
  4. Open json using the text editor.
  5. Fill in the Default User/Server Password field with the password for your players, and the Admin Group Password field with your admin password.
  6. Select Save & Exit.
  7. Start the server.

From now on, players will be asked for a password when they connect, and what they type in determines their permissions.

UserGroups code example:

"userGroups": [
  {
    "name": "Default",
    "password": "PlayerPasswordHere",
    "canKickBan": false,
    "canAccessInventories": true,
    "canEditWorld": false,
    "canEditBase": true,
    "canExtendBase": true,
    "reservedSlots": 0
  },
  {
    "name": "Admin",
    "password": "AdminPasswordHere",
    "canKickBan": true,
    "canAccessInventories": true,
    "canEditWorld": true,
    "canEditBase": true,
    "canExtendBase": true,
    "reservedSlots": 0
  }
]

Removing the password

If you want the server open to everyone again, stop it, empty the Default User/Server Password field, save the file and start the server back up. Leave the admin password in place so you keep your admin access.

Creating extra roles

The config editor only covers the default player group and the admin group. If you want something in between, such as a group that can build but cannot kick anyone, you will need to edit the userGroups section of the file using the text editor instead. Each group you add gets its own password and its own set of permissions.

Troubleshooting

  • Password not working: check that the server was completely stopped before you edited the file, and that you saved before starting it again.
  • A player has the wrong permissions: ask which password they used. If two groups share the same password, the game cannot tell them apart, so make sure every password is different.
