DayZ Badlands came out on 15 October 2026, and Nasdara is already doing what DayZ maps do best: making you feel like you’re one bad decision from a fresh spawn. Only this time the bad decision might be forgetting to pack water before a sandstorm rolls in.

If you run a community server, or you’re thinking about starting one for the new map, Badlands changes more than the scenery. Update 1.30 wiped everything, the modding scene is still catching up, and the new map has a few systems that play very differently on a private server than on a packed official one. Here’s what you need to know.

What is DayZ Badlands?

Badlands is a paid expansion, and its centrepiece is Nasdara Province, a 267 km² map that Bohemia calls the largest terrain it has ever made for DayZ. It’s a war-torn mix of mountains, desert plains, oil fields and crumbling military bases. Bohemia also pointed out a nice touch: Nasdara is set in an arid spring, which completes DayZ’s cycle of seasons now that every official map has one of its own.

The expansion launched alongside Update 1.30, which brings motorbikes to the base game, along with reworked skins for some firearms and a batch of quality-of-life changes.

Did Update 1.30 wipe servers?

Yes. Bohemia called 1.30 “a fresh start for everyone, with a full wipe across all platforms.” If your group had a base you were proud of, it’s gone on official servers. On your own server, you decide when wipes happen from here on, which is one of the quieter perks of running your own box. No surprise wipe because a big update dropped mid-raid week.

What’s actually new on Nasdara?

Mostly heat, and a lot of rubble to rebuild.

The sun is a threat in its own right, and the wind can build into full sandstorms. There are two new medical problems to manage, heatstroke and silicosis, so the right gear matters from your first few minutes. Water is scarce, and you need it for more than drinking. It cools you down, and it’s how you rinse sand out of your eyes after a storm. Fresh spawns who sprint for the nearest town without a canteen are going to have a rough time.

Then there’s rebuilding. Nearly 5,000 structures across the map can be rebuilt from rubble, and they include wells and irrigation tunnels as well as houses. That opens up some genuinely interesting server dynamics. Rebuild a well with a random and the whole server benefits. Or go the other way and build a sweaty base with a hidden entrance.

Motorbikes are finally in, with ragdoll physics for crashes (expect clips). They pair with the new Morse code radio gameplay: keep a personal radio on you, and transmissions give out coordinates and access codes for urban bunkers full of loot. It’s a proper reason to leave your base, which DayZ always needs.

The wildlife is new too, and the territorial dogs guarding their dead owners’ homes will ruin your day faster than the infected. Gear-wise, there’s everything from the old Lee-Enfield to modern SCR rifles, plus face wraps and dust goggles you’ll want long before you find them.

Do players need to own Badlands to join a Nasdara server?

Yes. Anyone joining a server running Nasdara needs the Badlands DLC. Players who only own the base game can still join servers on the free maps, so if part of your group hasn’t bought it yet, you can keep a Chernarus or Livonia server going and switch later.

Will my DayZ mods still work after 1.30?

Most will, but not all of them straight away. Big DayZ updates usually break something, and Bohemia’s launch post said the first 1.30 patch would go to Steam experimental the day after release, focused on “issues that affect modders on Steam”, with the stable patch following later on all platforms.

So if you run Expansion, a trader setup or a pile of base-building mods, give your mod list a once-over before you open the doors. Update the server and your Workshop mods, then test with a couple of mates before you go public. A good habit: take a manual backup before each update so you can roll back if a mod author hasn’t caught up yet.

There’s one longer-term thing worth knowing too. Nasdara’s underground facilities run on a new terrain-hole system, and Bohemia says it will be available for other maps and to the modding community. Custom map makers are going to have fun with that.

Can console players join a PC DayZ server?

No. DayZ has no crossplay between PC and consoles, so a PC community server is for Steam players only. Worth knowing before you promise your Xbox mate a spot on the whitelist.

Why run your own Badlands server?

Official servers are fine for a taste of Nasdara. The trouble is that you don’t get a say in how any of it is tuned. A private or community server lets you tune the parts that make Badlands hard. Want water a bit less scarce while your group learns the map? Want more loot in those bunkers so the Morse code hunt feels worth it? That’s all in the Central Economy files, and you can edit them yourself.

Our DayZ server hosting is set up for exactly this. You get one-click Steam Workshop mods with the keys handled for you, full access to types.xml and the rest of the economy files, nightly offsite backups, and the choice of Nasdara, Sakhal, Livonia, Chernarus or community maps like Namalsk and Deer Isle. Setup starts automatically as soon as your order is paid.

How do I switch my server to Nasdara?

Update the server files from Steam in the Gamepanel first, then change the mission to Nasdara in your server config and restart. Our guide on changing your DayZ server to the Badlands (Nasdara) map goes through it step by step, including the update option that keeps your existing XML and JSON edits.

A few things to sort before launch night:

  1. Back up the server, then update it from Steam.
  2. Update every Workshop mod and drop any that haven’t been patched for 1.30 yet.
  3. Switch the mission to Nasdara and restart.
  4. Tell your players they’ll need the Badlands DLC to join.
  5. Tweak loot and water in the economy files if you want an easier first week. Our types.xml guide shows where everything lives.

If you’ve been on the fence about running your own server, Badlands is about as good a moment as you’ll get. Everyone’s starting from nothing after the wipe anyway. Spin up a DayZ server on the 48-hour free trial, get your squad on Nasdara, and see if you can survive the first sandstorm. Bring water.
