How to add mods

Post by Ragonz » Fri Aug 08, 2014 4:39 pm

Adding mods whilst generating a new world OR an existing world whilst using SEServerExtender

Note - Unless you have SEServerExtender installed we reccomend you use the guide on adding mods to an existing world after creating it as you can add as many as you want rather than be limited to 6

1. simply find a mod that you want on the workshop (eg. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f ... =296249959)
2. copy the number at the end (for the example it would be 296249959)
3. tick enable mods
4. untick persistent world (this is to allow the generation of a new world with the mods you are adding. If you want to add mods to an existing world see below)
5. add it into the config of your server as mod1 mod2 etc.
6. for any mod box that you are not using make sure you fill it with a mod you are already using above (all the boxes can be the same if needs be)
7. Save the config
8. reboot server

Adding mods to an already existing world
Note - This guide assumes you already have a working world you wish to add mods to

1. Follow steps 1-5 here to open your worlds sandbox.sbc file
2. Find a mod that you want on the workshop (eg. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f ... =296249959)
3. copy the number at the end (for the example it would be 296249959)
4. Open your worlds sandbox.sbc file and find '<Mods />
it should look like this:

Code: Select all

  <Mods />
5. Change it so that it looks like this (minus the square brackets):

Code: Select all

  <Mods>
<ModItem>
<Name>[number from step 2].sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>[number from step 2]</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
  </Mods>
For more than 1 mod it should look like this (Again minus the square brackets)

<Mods>
<ModItem>
<Name>[number from step 2].sbm</Name>
<PublishedFileId>[number from step 2]</PublishedFileId>
</ModItem>
<ModItem>
<Name>[number from step 2].sbm</Name>
<PublishedFileId>[number from step 2]</PublishedFileId>
</ModItem>
</Mods>
8. Save the changes you have made
9. reboot your server

If you have done it correctly the mods will load up and your Sandbox.sbc file should look somthing like this

Code: Select all

<Mods>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294555339.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294555339</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294534489.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294534489</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294617824.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294617824</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>295393216.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>295393216</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>297207615.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>297207615</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294621451.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294621451</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>296437598.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>296437598</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
  </Mods>
Troubleshooting Steps

So you have just set up all the mods you wanted but now you cant connect to your server? Just follow this guide

1. Have you waited long enough? To download the mods from the workshop, unpack them and add them into your server can take a few minutes.
2. Are you sure you have formatted them properly? Even a single missing [ will stop is from working
3. Are all the mods you have added in date/still working/public?
4. Finally remove all the mods and add them one by one to see which one is stopping it

This doesn't work. Anytime we try adding mods the server hangs, it shows running (pid 0) and the server doesn't appear in the server list. We are trying to add mods to an existing world btw.

Also, more (way more) input fields for mods please!

How to add mods new on new version of game. (Existing world)

BEFORE DOING IT STOP SERVER

1. Open sandbox.sbc from save folder (like in older version)
2. Find '<Mods />
it should look like this:

Code: Select all

  </AllPlayers>
  <Mods />
</MyObjectBuilder_Checkpoint>
3. Change it so it look like this:

Code: Select all

  </AllPlayers>
  <Mods>
  </Mods>
4. Add mods like before (example one)

Code: Select all

  <Mods>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294555339.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294555339</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294534489.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294534489</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294617824.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294617824</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>295393216.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>295393216</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>297207615.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>297207615</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>294621451.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>294621451</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
    <ModItem>
      <Name>296437598.sbm</Name>
      <PublishedFileId>296437598</PublishedFileId>
    </ModItem>
  </Mods>
5. Save file, start server

Some pro tips:
- Use Notepad ++ it will help u keep necesary spaces in code so it wont break
- Allways check mod ID so its correct
- Before joining server wait about 30-50 seconds or it wont answer
- U can add countless amounts of mods

Hope it helps someone have fun :3

-Snipped
Got a few questions as I am unable to figure this out.
1.When do you start the server?(in this process.)
2a.When creating a new world the enable mods has to be unchecked?
2b.Wouldn't that conflict with installing them in the first place?
3.What exactly should be put in the "<unsignedLong></unsignedLong>"? I am sure I have the modnumbers right. but unclear about the "unsignedLong" thing.

Thanks for any feedback,
Gizmo

P.S. After playing around for awhile i got it to work.

When I alter the sandbox.sbc as mentioned and I start the server, it appears fine at first but then goes to pid 0 and I can never connect.
I undo the changes and restart and the game is fine.

however the one mod that I am trying is not working.

<AllPlayers />
<Mods>
<ModItem>
<Name>294422098.sbm</Name>
<PublishedFileId>294422098</PublishedFileId>
</ModItem>
</Mods>
</MyObjectBuilder_Checkpoint>

Hi VellaiRaja

If your still having problems with mods, put in a support ticket and we can give you a hand. It all looks ok however just make sure you have persistent worlds set and you have selected the world that you are editing the sandbox.sbc file for.

I suspect that I might be having an issue with copy and paste not keeping the justification in the syntax.. I will test that theory soon.

So to change what you start with for instance say...to make it default where you spawn with x amount of materials to craft a medbay/reactor/gravity well how would you do this? Would I have to edit the sandbox file or is this a mod you download?

Also there are only 6 mod spots for the mods in the config files..shoudn't I just leave them blank? From what I have noticed is you can just enter the addon into one of the 6 mod slots so it inputs it into the sandbox file in the correct order/spot easier. You can just keep doing that. Also if you have multiple mods just create a collection on the steam workshop.

What I am having problems with is figuring out how to change the starter ship? That doesn't see to be a normal mod? Do I need to actually replace a file?
